CAIRO (Reuters) - Air strikes targeted terrorist strongholds near the eastern city of Derna on Friday evening in retaliation for an attack in the southern Egyptian province of Minya that killed 29 people, military sources said.
The Egyptian army announced that its air force had carried out strikes on militant camps in Libya, which were confirmed in the planning and execution of the attack, coinciding with statements made by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in a televised speech.
Sisi said he ordered strikes against "terrorist camps." He said after a security meeting: "I am talking to you was a very strong blow," threatening to target any camps at home or abroad are training gunmen to strike Egypt.
Sisi called for punishing countries that support terrorism without courtesy or reconciliation.
In a statement broadcast on Friday night, the military said the military operation was still going on, and a picture of two pilots preparing to carry out strikes and warplanes at the time of takeoff.
The Egyptian air force destroyed the main headquarters of the Council of the [Mujahedeen] Darna in Libya, and quoted the official Middle East News Agency quoted senior sources as saying: "The Egyptian air force completely destroyed the headquarters of this Council."
Egyptian television said in an urgent statement: "The Air Force carries out six sorties to target six areas of concentration of terrorist elements in the city of Derna of Libya."
On the other hand, the Libyan National Army announced that its aircraft participated in the air strikes launched by the Egyptian Air Force in Darnah.
The Air Force Information Office for Eastern Libya said in a statement that the raids targeted al Qaeda-linked forces in a number of locations and would be followed by a ground operation.
A resident of Darnah told Reuters he had heard four loud explosions and the attacks targeted camps around Dernah used by militants belonging to the al Qaeda-linked Shura Council.
Derna is one of the cities where the Libyan National Army forces, led by Major General Khalifa Hafer, are trying to wrest control from militants and other opponents, besieging the city and launching air strikes from time to time.
