U.S. assures Turkey over arming Syrian Kurds in Islamic State fight

    Posted on June 2, 2017

WASHINGTON,— The US military offered assurances to Turkey on Thursday over supplying arms to Kurdish fighters in Syrian Kurdistan against the Islamic State group, after Ankara called the move “extremely dangerous.”

“We are being transparent with Turkey on the details on what we are providing,” said Baghdad-based Pentagon spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon.

“We are maintaining full accountability of the weapons we are providing the SDF,” he said, referring to the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-Syrian Arab alliance now moving in on the Islamic State group’s Syria stronghold of Raqa.

The Pentagon on Tuesday said it had begun to transfer small arms and vehicles to the Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-Syrian Arab alliance fighting the Islamic State group and containing the powerful Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) fighters.

Turkey links to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) separatists it calls a terror group.

In May, US President Donald Trump approved arming the YPG to support the assault on Raqqa.

Turkey on Tuesday said arming the YPG was an “extremely dangerous” move and urged Washington to reverse its “mistake.”

The arms going to the SDF could include anti-armor weapons like rocket-propelled grenades or TOW missiles, in addition to vehicles, AK-47s and small-caliber machine guns.

Dillon said any arms provided will be recorded by serial number.

“We will maintain that in our database, and we will share that information with allies to the north that are concerned about the weapons we are providing,” he said.

U.S regards the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party PYD and its powerful military wing YPG, which is part of SDF alliance, as key ally against Islamic State and the most effective fighting force against IS in Syria and has provided them with arms, air support as well as the military advisers.

The Kurdish YPG, which has 60,000 fighters, has seized swathes of Syria from IS [Daesh].

Syrian Kurdistan’s ruling PYD has established three autonomous zones, or Cantons of Jazeera, Kobani and Afrin and a Kurdish government across Syrian Kurdistan in 2013. On March 17, 2016 Syria’s Kurds declared a federal region in Syrian Kurdistan.
