Shafaq News/ The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, stressed on Saturday the necessity for the Peshmerga forces and the rest of the armed forces in the region to be an independent institution and far from political and partisan conflicts, calling on the political forces that won the Kurdistan elections to start a "serious and constructive" dialogue to form a new "strong and effective" government.
This came in a speech he delivered during the graduation ceremony of the fourth officers' course in Qalajolan.
Nechirvan Barzani said in his speech, "We in the Kurdistan Region have a deep and firm belief that the Peshmerga and our other armed forces should and must be an independent national and professional institution, and that they should be far from any kind of political and partisan differences and conflicts, and that these forces should be subordinate to the homeland and to the people of Kurdistan with all its components."
He added that the Peshmerga forces are an important and main part of the Iraqi defense system, so it is Iraq's responsibility from all sides to support the empowerment of the Peshmerga, adding: We are constantly and seriously working to enhance the ability and capacity of the Peshmerga forces so that they can, in the best way, confront any challenge and threat, as they have always been the impregnable shield of Kurdistan.
The President of the Kurdistan Region stressed that the Peshmerga forces and our other forces in the war against terrorism and confronting the terrorist organization ISIS, in fact and with their blood, have proven that they are up to the national and historical responsibility, noting that these forces have presented a unique model of courage, sacrifice, and devotion for the homeland.
Nechirvan Barzani also pointed out that "at the current stage, in which terrorism and extremism still pose a real threat, we emphasize the continuation of coordination and joint cooperation between the Peshmerga forces, the Iraqi army, and the international coalition forces," expressing his thanks to the international coalition against ISIS for its continuous support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
He also expressed his appreciation and special thanks for the coalition’s support for unifying and organizing the Peshmerga forces under the umbrella of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs in the Kurdistan Regional Government so that they would be national forces protecting the gains of the region with all its components, adding: It is true that there are problems and obstacles facing the process, and the steps are slow in this area, but they are moving forward in a good way.
The President of the Region pledged to continue the process of reforming and unifying the Peshmerga forces, adding that: The problems and complexities of the Middle East region threaten the security and stability of Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and the entire region, adding: We in the Kurdistan Region emphasize the necessity of keeping Iraq away from the conflicts and problems of the region because Iraq needs calm, stability and permanent development, not more tensions, disagreements and conflicts.
He went on to say that Iraq, after a history full of pain, suffering and destruction due to successive wars, now needs stability so that it can use its rich wealth and resources in reconstruction, building, development and improving life sectors, stressing that the people of Kurdistan and Iraq in all their regions deserve a decent life and more services.
Nechirvan Barzani stressed that the Kurdistan Region will remain a factor of stability in the region, and will extend a helping hand to all parties within the framework of establishing security, stability and peaceful coexistence, saying that the experience of decades in the Kurdistan Region has taught us that dialogue, understanding and continuous negotiation are the only appropriate and correct way to solve problems and end crises.
He expressed his belief that strengthening cooperation and coordination between all components is the real guarantee in building a democratic, federal Iraq that respects pluralism and differences and preserves the rights and freedoms of all components.
He pointed out that considering the sensitive phase following the elections in the Kurdistan Region, which were successful elections with the participation of about 70 percent of the people of Kurdistan in voting, it was a victory for Kurdistan by all standards, calling on all political forces that won the elections to put the national interest at the forefront of their priorities, and to begin a serious, responsible and constructive dialogue to form a strong and effective government.
