    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
MP Mudhar Al-Karwi revealed, today, Thursday (November 14, 2024), that 90% of MPs support raising the retirement age in Iraqi institutions to 63 years.
Al-Karwi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "There is a movement towards raising the retirement age in Iraqi institutions to 63 years, in light of the presence of 90% of the representatives who support this option for several reasons, the most prominent of which is the emergence of the need to give the competent people more time in service and the need of the departments for them."
He added, "Proceeding with this option will require coordination with the government because any move forward with this option will require financial cover, and this is what must be secured first," expecting that "consultations regarding it will be greater during 2025."
Al-Karwi said, "There are several laws currently in place that are being prepared to be decided upon during the coming period, especially the general amnesty that a large number of citizens are awaiting."
On November 19, 2019, Parliament voted on the first amendment to the Unified Retirement Law No. 9 of 2014. The amendment stipulated that an employee be referred to retirement in one of two cases: first, when he reaches 60 years of age, which is the legal age for retirement regardless of his length of service, and second, if the official medical committee decides that he is unfit for service.
The amendment of the retirement law and the reduction of the retirement age came after the October 2019 movement, and the aim of the decision was to provide job opportunities for young people and include them in government jobs.
After the law was passed, many government institutions lost their expertise and competencies, and some government institutions began submitting requests to extend the service of some experienced and competent people, or those with rare specializations, in order to keep them in service for a longer period.
