In the Iraqi political arena, and similar to some countries in the region, complications have recently begun to increase in light of the increasing attacks launched by the so-called "Iraqi resistance factions" against targets belonging to the Israeli entity.

As the pace of these operations escalates, the silence of the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emerges as a pivotal factor that raises many questions about the nature of the official position and its reasons. Hence, the government appears hesitant to take a clear position, which leads to questions being raised about the factors influencing this silence.

As the attacks escalate, many questions are being raised by observers: Does the government fear international repercussions and reactions from global powers? Or does the silence stem from complex internal balances related to the political scene in Iraq, or the continued American influence in the country? Is Baghdad being subjected to direct pressure from the previous Trump administration, which has always stressed confronting any support for the resistance? Moreover, there are concerns about the risks that Iraq may face if the United States takes punitive measures, making this issue a focus of sensitive regional and international interventions.

Since the start of the war in Gaza and its expansion into Lebanon, Iraqi factions have been launching missile and drone attacks on Israel, saying that they are "in support of the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip," stressing that "their attacks are a victory for civilians in Gaza and Lebanon, as they are being subjected to brutal attacks," according to their description.

"Al-Sudani failed to manage the factions file"

The head of the Iraqi Center for Political Thought, Ihsan Al-Shammari, says, “The refusal of Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s government to comment on the continued attacks of the resistance factions comes for many reasons, most notably the government’s plan not to escalate media campaigns against the factions, in addition to the fact that the factions are the pillar of the current government, so it is difficult for it to abandon its political environment.”

In an interview with the "Al-Jabal" platform, Al-Shammari added, "The third reason lies in the lack of media escalation to avoid international sanctions, while the fourth reason goes towards Al-Sudani's inability to limit these attacks, so silence indicates an inability to address this file," explaining that "confronting the factions leads to opening an internal political front, and this is what Al-Sudani cannot confront."

According to Al-Shammari, "Washington exerted many pressures on Al-Sudani's government in order to stop the factions' attacks on some areas belonging to the Israeli entity," stressing that "all the efforts made by Al-Sudani regarding this issue with the leaders in the Coordination Framework failed."

"Al-Sudani is worried," said Al-Shammari, who confirmed that the new US administration headed by Trump "is tough on the factions' file," and therefore Iraq will face more pressure regarding this file.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which includes several factions, most notably the "Hezbollah Brigades, Al-Nujaba Brigades, and Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades," announces almost daily the targeting and striking of many vital Israeli targets in the Golan Heights and Haifa in the north to Eilat in the south.

    "Direct messages from Iraqi factions"

Local press reports in Iraq circulated information about an official Iraqi security delegation visiting Tehran a few days ago, in an attempt to neutralize the Iraqi factions from the current escalation, in light of the factions continuing to launch attacks on Israeli sites.

A senior leader in the resistance factions told the "Al-Jabal" platform, "The Iraqi resistance considers targeting the sites of the Israeli entity in the region to be a natural and legitimate response to the aggressive policies pursued by the occupation, whether through direct attacks on the Palestinian people or through its continuous threat to the stability and security of the countries of the region."

The resistance factions, according to the leader, believe that “this entity has left no choice for the peoples of the region but deterrence and resistance, after it continued its violations and escalation against human rights and dignity, and did not take into account any political or humanitarian considerations.”

The leader, who requested anonymity, added, "The position of the factions is clear and firm. They are fully aware that the Israeli entity relies on a policy of force and arrogance, and continues to exploit any weakness or laxity to impose its expansionist agenda."

According to the leader, "There is international pressure being exerted on some governments in the region, including Iraq, to prevent them from supporting the resistance or taking a clear position regarding the occupation's practices, but the resistance is continuing its approach and will not hesitate to perform its defensive duty."

He concluded his speech by saying, "Any international threats or sanctions mean nothing to the resistance, as the resistance derives its legitimacy from the will of the people and their legitimate right to defend their land and holy sites," refusing that "this right be transformed into a tool for pressure and political blackmail."

The Iraqi government spokesman, Bassem Al-Awadi, previously said in an official statement that the government directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to communicate with Washington "regarding this violation, in accordance with the terms of the bilateral strategic framework agreement concluded between the two countries, and the United States' commitment to the security and sovereignty of Iraq," stressing the government's firm commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, and sanctity of Iraq's territory."

Last month, the Iraqi government officially submitted a memorandum of protest to the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council, due to what it described as Israel’s “violation” of Iraqi airspace and its use to attack Iran.

"The Sudanese are in an unenviable position"

Al-Nasser Drid, a political researcher from Canada, says, “Al-Sudani’s situation is now critical, as he is basically suffering from a crisis with his partners in the Coordination Framework, which puts him in a weak position and he is now unable to direct them regarding the factions’ continued strikes on targets in Israeli territory.”

According to what Drid told the "Al-Jabal" platform, "Al-Sudani is now embarrassed by international obligations, especially towards Washington regarding the factions file," noting that "Al-Sudani is unable to support the United States regionally on the one hand, and on the other hand he is unable to keep up with his partners in the Coordination Framework, who are the same ones who control some of the known resistance factions."

Drid continued his talk, saying, "The Trump administration has not yet taken power, so no one knows what kind of plans or decisions will be taken regarding Iraq regarding the factions file," adding that "Al-Sudani is now in an unenviable position."

It is noteworthy that Subhan Mulla Jiyad, the political advisor to the Prime Minister, confirmed that the government does not want to be part of the war between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah, and that it supports a political and diplomatic solution, and for this reason it worked to convince the factions of this.

He said in a press statement, followed by "Al-Jabal", that the government wanted to keep the war confined to Israel and Hamas, and to find a diplomatic solution, pointing to the pressure exerted on the Iraqi factions to reduce attacks on the occupied territories.
