Baghdad/Al-Masala: Iranian newspapers, especially the “Donya-e Eqtesad” newspaper, praised the Iraqi Development Road project, which constitutes an important step to enhance infrastructure and economic development in Iraq, while Iraqi media reported that the project witnessed the first docking of commercial ships in the port of Faw, which is a strategic starting point to reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil and diversify the sources of the economy.
The project, which extends from the port of Faw in southern Iraq to Türkiye, includes the establishment of a land transport network linking the Arabian Gulf with Turkey and Europe.
According to reports, the project will require three phases to be fully operational by 2050, making it one of the most prominent development initiatives in Iraq.
The Donya-e Eqtesad newspaper described the project as increasing Iraq’s geopolitical importance, considering it to strengthen its position as a pivotal state next to Iran. It pointed out that the project represents a potential alternative to Iran’s North-South Corridor, creating strategic competition between the two countries on the level of trade routes.
The project aims to provide a low-cost transport route linking the Gulf countries to Europe, boosting cross-border trade and creating new opportunities for investment and regional cooperation. It is also expected to contribute to increased integration between Iraq and neighboring countries, including Turkey, which will play a major role in the project.
The Faw Port is the main starting point for the project. It includes the construction of a new port capable of receiving large ships, in addition to advanced logistics facilities. The port’s annual capacity is expected to reach 12 million tons, enhancing Iraq’s maritime and logistics capabilities.
With a budget of $1.2 billion, the project represents a major financial challenge, but it has enormous development potential. The Iraqi government is seeking to secure the necessary funding through cooperation with international financial institutions and neighboring countries, such as the UAE and Qatar. Turkish and European investments are also being considered to support the project.
In addition to the financial challenges, the project faces geopolitical risks due to its location in a volatile region. This requires enhanced communication and coordination with neighboring countries to ensure stability in the region.
