    Economy News - Follow-up
[rtl]Hundreds of Maghreb farmers are waiting for compensation from Iraq due to “damages they suffered” during the Iran and Gulf wars after they had been working in Iraq, even though their work in Iraq was in accordance with “privileges granted to them by the former regime.”[/rtl]

[rtl]A Moroccan parliamentary question was sent to Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, regarding this file that Rabat raised with Iraq at the beginning of last year 2023, while the Moroccan Foreign Minister’s answer included that Morocco formed a committee to meet with those affected and prepare their files and that the response of the Iraqi authorities “was positive, as it proposed forming a joint Moroccan-Iraqi committee to resolve this issue.”[/rtl]

[rtl]He explained that "the ministry held several meetings with those affected, and listened to their demands to find a solution to the damage they suffered as a result of the war, and to intervene with the Iraqi authorities to demand compensation."[/rtl]

[rtl]In the early eighties, hundreds of Moroccan farmers immigrated to Iraq to work in agriculture, after an agreement was signed by Rabat and Baghdad to settle and work in agriculture. Under this agreement, Iraq brought in hundreds of farmers and distributed 10 hectares to each of them under long-term contracts that would benefit their children and grandchildren.[/rtl]

[rtl]Moroccan immigrants were affected for years after that by the repercussions of the first Gulf War between Iraq and Iran (1980-1988), and they were also affected by the repercussions of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. These circumstances forced many Moroccan farmers to leave Iraq and return to their country in separate years between 1980 and 1990.[/rtl]

[rtl]The associations active in defending the rights of these people estimate the number of Moroccans affected by the Gulf War at about 900, and demand that the Moroccan and Iraqi authorities provide them with justice and compensation for the losses they suffered as a result of the war.[/rtl]

[rtl]In a letter to the Moroccan Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, last year, the victims demanded justice and compensation, considering that they were victims of wars. The letter stated, “We have left the camel and its load. We demand a comprehensive review of its situation.” The affected families are demanding compensation for loss of work, compensation for the property they left behind in Iraq, and to benefit from a pension.[/rtl]
