Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that Russia and the United States will ensure that Israel's interests are taken into account when establishing non-escalation zones in Syria.
Lavrov's reassurance to Israel came in response to comments by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who told reporters in Paris on Sunday, that the non-escalation arrangements were perpetuating Iran's presence in Syria.
Netanyahu said he had assured the French president of his full opposition to the agreement to reduce the escalation between Washington and Moscow in the Syrian south.
The newspaper Haaretz quoted an unnamed source as saying that Israel was concerned that Iran would strengthen its presence in Syria under the truce. She added that Tehran's move in Syria does not stop at sending advisers, but rather in planning to establish an air and naval base. Ending 29/34 R.
