US Senate approves new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea

    Editorial date: 2017/7/28

The United States Senate overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea despite objections from the White House.
The House of Representatives passed the draft new penal law earlier this week by a large majority as well.
After approval by both houses, the legislation will be sent to President Donald Trump for signature and effect. But Trump has the power to veto him.
The presidential veto could be bypassed by a two-thirds vote in the House and Senate in favor of the bill.
The sanctions against Moscow were approved after Russia's annexation of the Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
The debate over the new sanctions coincided with ongoing investigations into allegations of Russian intervention in the presidential election in 2016.
Trump has consistently denied that Russia intervened in favor of his campaign .
The White House is particularly concerned about a provision in the new bill that limits Trump's ability to lift sanctions.
Under the new legislation, the president will have to consult with Congress first before making such a decision.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said earlier this week after the House passed the bill that it "tightens the grip on our most dangerous adversary in order to keep Americans safe."
But the bill has been criticized by some European countries benefiting from Russian energy pipelines, which may be under new sanctions.
It remains to be seen whether the president will try to veto the bill.
The new head of communications at the White House, Anthony Scaramuchi, told CNN that "the president" may sign the sanctions exactly as he is or he may use the veto and negotiate a firmer deal against the Russians.
