International demands to open an investigation into the crimes of Saudi aggression in Yemen

    29/08/2017

Human Rights Watch and 56 local and international NGOs have called on the UN Human Rights Council to conduct an independent investigation into the abuses committed by the US-Saudi coalition in Yemen, asserting that these violations have escalated into war crimes.

In a letter addressed to permanent representatives of Member States and observers of the United Nations Human Rights Council, human rights organizations said the council should open an independent international investigation into violations by all parties to the conflict in Yemen.

The organizations added that the countries of aggression on Yemen continue to commit serious violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law .. Noting that Yemen is currently facing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, where at least 7 million people live on the brink of famine and suffer hundreds of thousands of cholera .

"All these attacks appear to have violated international humanitarian law or the laws of war, some of which may amount to war crimes," Amnesty said in its report.

"The Saudi-led coalition launched dozens of unlawful air strikes using large-scale banned weapons since the war on Yemen on March 26, 2015, resulting in the deaths of 5,110 civilians and the injury of at least 8,719 during the conflict, The total number is much higher. "

"Member States of the UN Human Rights Council have bowed twice to the pressure of the Saudi-led coalition and have not taken a principled stand against the repeated war crimes and the worst global crisis," said John Fisher, director of Human Rights Watch's Geneva office. Governments in September will not bow to political pressure, but will respond in the best way to help the Yemeni people and ensure the Council's commitment to empower it by strengthening accountability, regardless of those involved. "

It is noteworthy that the Human Rights Council failed in 2015 and 2016 to establish an international investigation into the violations of the coalition of the US-Saudi aggression in Yemen because of the submission of a number of countries to the pressures of US-Saudi Arabia. Sf
