Drought destroys Wassit farms and drives farmers to migrate

 Wasit / Jabbar in Jay

Farmers and farmers in the south and south-west of Wasit province expressed their intention to migrate to other areas and left them to agriculture because of the scarcity of water that is no longer sufficient to drink, while others have taken responsibility for the excess water quotas and the installation of large pumps on streams and rivers contrary to the law, The local government intends to lift all these abuses and ensure adequate water for agriculture during the winter and summer seasons.
"Hundreds of farmers and farmers in the area have decided to leave agriculture and migration to other areas because of the scarcity of water, which is no longer sufficient to drink," said one of the farmers in Marwija district, Salem Awad.
"The issue of migration is inevitable after avoiding water scarcity significantly in the Merzija River, which provided water for large areas of agricultural land up to 45,000 dunums and perhaps more within the agricultural plan of the province," Awad said.
Awad pointed out that "this scarcity has several reasons, first and foremost the exacerbation of the phenomenon of excesses on water quotas and take share of the other, in addition to some farmers whose land is located at the head of the river to the installation of large pumps contrary to the controls and this itself is a violation of the legal controls and instructions of the Ministry of Water Resources. "
The farmer Awad said that "the total area cultivated with wheat and barley within his village was about two thousand acres, but this season did not reach the total area planted with wheat to 200 acres."
"There is no choice but to leave agriculture and migration to other areas in search of water,"
said farmer Tuma 'Abd Dhiab in the outskirts of Al-Bashaer district of the neighborhood district. "Dozens of agricultural villages relied on a schedule to get Water and drinking water. But it is different today. There is a great scarcity in the table that has led to the denial of tens of farmers from agriculture, in addition to the fears that threaten livestock. There is no choice but to leave agriculture, sell their livestock and move to other areas. "
"We have no choice but to emigrate, but many emigrated to other areas after they settled in those lands," he said.
He called on the local government to "play its role in achieving the most important requirements of the agricultural process, including the provision of irrigation water for all agricultural land within the agricultural plan of the province."
"The laxity or neglect of this aspect will have huge negative repercussions on hundreds of farmers and farmers as well as on the province's winter farming plan," he said.
"The issue of water scarcity is a public issue, but it is not enough to push agriculture and migration to other areas, which is unacceptable," said the governor of Wasit province for agriculture and water resources.
"The areas to the south-west and south of Wasit are already suffering from this scarcity, but as a local government we will work to secure enough water to irrigate all the agricultural areas included in the winter plan for wheat and barley crops by tackling and overcoming all abuses and holding those who repeat these abuses to the farmers and farmers Whose lands lie at the front of streams and rivers. "
"A month ago, we started a process of serious follow-up on the issue of transgressions and dozens of irregular openings were filled with large amounts of water that were supposed to reach remote and remote areas," he said.
    He pointed out that "
In turn, the Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources in the Council of Wasit Hashim Al-Awadi that "the agricultural plan for the season, which amounts to one million and 200 thousand acres should be properly and fully implemented as it was based mainly on the ability of the Ministry of Water Resources to secure an adequate share of water for that area Within all districts and districts. "
Al-Awadi promised that "a retreat in the planned plan would cause significant damage to the local economy, especially as the province of Wasit tops the annual provinces producing wheat and barley crops and produced in the last two years about 800 thousand tons."
"The local government and through the Higher Agricultural Committee have given assurances and pledges to farmers whose lands are located in areas suffering from water scarcity, provided that adequate water rations are provided for all agricultural areas and that there is no transgression of farmers at the expense of others," Awadi said.
"Those who exceed the water quotas will expose themselves to legal accountability, fines and possibly other deterrent sanctions," al-Awadi said.
Wasit province topped the list of provinces producing wheat and barley crops during the last marketing season after producing more than 800 thousand tons of these crops, in addition to that it has also taken the lead for the past four seasons with a quantity of grain approached the 800 thousand tons.
The area suitable for agriculture in Wasit province and its center of Kut (180 km southeast of Baghdad) is estimated at 2556626 dunums of which 47847 dunums of reclaimed land and 151550 semi-reclaimed lands, while the estimated area of arable land is 2035,489 dunums. The main source of irrigation is the irrigation system, which relies on electricity. In both cases, the Tigris River is the main source as it penetrates the governorate from the north to the south-east and extends for 327 km.
