[rtl]The 28 EU member states have asked the Commission to consider whether to "reduce or redirect money" to be paid to Turkey in the pre-accession period.[/rtl]
[rtl]"We have asked the Commission to consider whether the pre-accession funds will be reduced or redirected," said European Council President Donald Tusk.[/rtl]
[rtl]He added that "Turkey must respect all member states in their relations with the European Union."[/rtl]
[rtl]He referred to the issue of the Customs Union, which Ankara is demanding to update, which is rejected by the Europeans because of the bad relations with Ankara now.[/rtl]
[rtl]The official said that European countries want to keep the door open to Ankara, "but the current situation in Turkey makes it difficult," and acknowledged the existence of "substantive discussions" between the leaders of the European Union on their relations with this country.[/rtl]
[rtl]Some European leaders, especially German Chancellor Angela Merkel, called last Thursday to reduce or reorient this funding for accession negotiations with Turkey to show their differences with Ankara.[/rtl]
[rtl]Several European countries have been in a state of intense tension with Turkey since the failed coup in July 2016, which Ankara responded with widespread purges involving the expulsion of nearly 140,000 people and tens of thousands in prison.[/rtl]
[rtl]Europeans had set aside 4.45 billion euros for pre-accession funding for Turkey for the period 2014-2020, but only 368 million euros have been earmarked for projects to date.[/rtl]
