    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]Australian police announced on Tuesday they had arrested a sympathizer of an organization advocating plans to buy a gun and shooting crowds during New Year's Eve in Melbourne.[/ltr]
[ltr]Police said the 20-year-old Australian-born suspect was arrested on Monday during a police operation that raided a house in Werribe, a suburb of Melbourne, South Australia, and was due to be charged Tuesday.[/ltr]
[ltr]State Department deputy police chief Sean Patton said the man was "sympathetic to a hasty organization," and that the attack he planned would probably have been a "catastrophic" attack.[/ltr]
[ltr]Police said the suspect was browsing an al-Qaeda-generated Internet directory on how to use firearms and commit attacks, but was arrested before he could buy a machine gun.[/ltr]
[ltr]"He planned to use a firearm to shoot as many people as possible at Vederation Square on New Year's Eve," Patton said.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Courtyard Square is located in the heart of Melbourne, near Flinders Street Railway Station and St. Paul's Cathedral. One of Melbourne's main places where people gather on December 31 to celebrate a new year.[/ltr]
[ltr]"It is very worrying for us to have a possible plot during the holiday season to commit a terrorist act," Patton said.[/ltr]
[ltr]In September 2014, Australia raised the level of warning of a terrorist act, amid fears that individuals might launch attacks from organizations such as a sympathetic organization.[/ltr]
[ltr]Australian authorities have reported that at least 13 attacks have been prevented in the last few years[/ltr]
