After days of intense negotiations, Britain failed to reach an agreement with the European Union to move to a new phase of negotiations on conditions for the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
This came despite earlier media reports of a breakthrough in the negotiations and the two sides able to reach agreement on the Irish border, the most sensitive issue in the talks.
The BBC confirmed that the meeting between British Prime Minister Teresa Mae and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was not crowned with success.
But Teresa Mae at a joint press conference with Junker after the meeting indicated progress, adding that differences remained on some issues.
The British Prime Minister stressed that the negotiations will resume by the end of the week, expressing the conviction that the parties will be able to resolve the issue.
Juncker said it was not possible to reach a final agreement today, despite the parties' efforts and progress.
"We have a friendly and constructive meeting today, which is a difficult negotiator, because it defends Britain's view of the energy it has," he said.
The President of the European Commission confirmed that he is fully convinced that London and Brussels can make tangible progress before the European Council summit scheduled to be held after 10 days.
The European Union has refused to negotiate trade relations with Britain after BRICT, as long as the rights of citizens and the amount Britain should pay when exiting the Union (the so-called divorce agreement) and the issue of Northern Ireland's borders are not agreed.
