WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel would damage the Palestinian-Israeli peace process at least in the short term, officials said Thursday.
The two officials, who declined to be identified, said in a televised statement, "Trend Press" on Thursday to the negative atmosphere that will result from the decision in the region.
"We are ready for the (peace) process to be derailed, but I am confident that this will be temporary," one official said.
The official said that the US president's staff on the Middle East peace process did not speak to Palestinian officials after Trump took the decision.
On the timing of the decision, the official said that Washington believed that if a possible Israeli-Palestinian agreement was reached, the declaration of the resolution would be more damaging, without clarifying it.
The second official pointed out that the resolution will cause problems in the near term, expressing the hope that the resolution will serve the peace process in the long term.
Since the US Congress passed a law in 1995 to transfer the embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, US presidents have repeatedly delayed ratification of the move for six months, in order to protect American interests.
On Wednesday, Trump announced in a televised address from the White House his country's official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of his country's embassy from Tel Aviv.
The Palestinians insist on the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem, which will cause widespread popular anger in the region and completely undermine the peace process, which has been stalled since 2014.
