China said on Thursday that the embassies of the United States and Germany in Beijing have no right to criticize an internal affair concerning China's judicial system after China called for the release of a leading human rights activist.

Activist and blogger Wu Gan was sentenced on Tuesday to eight years in prison for sabotage. Prior to his arrest in May 2015, he consistently addressed sensitive issues of potential abuse of power.

The US and German embassies in a joint statement on Wednesday called for Wu's release. They also demanded that human rights lawyer Xie Yang, who was also sentenced on Tuesday, be allowed to resume his work freely.

"The embassies have no right to criticize China's purely internal affairs as much as to China's judicial sovereignty," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news conference in Beijing on Thursday.

"We hope the diplomatic missions will take the right position with regard to their responsibilities," she said.

"China is a state governed by law and judicial officials deal with cases according to law," she said.

Wu's sentence has been the harshest since Chinese authorities began what human rights groups called an unprecedented crackdown on activists and human rights lawyers in July 2015.

The crackdown, which saw no sign of retreating as President Xi Jinping enters his second five-year term, has drawn widespread criticism from Western capitals.

Germany is one of the most vocal critics of China, angering Beijing. C
