[ltr]Facebook said it would conduct a new comprehensive search of its records of any "potential publicity" that Russian agents may have published in the run-up to the 2016 referendum on Britain's exit from the European Union.[/ltr]
[ltr]Some British lawmakers have complained that Facebook, the world's largest social networking network, has made only limited research on evidence that the Russians manipulated the network and intervened in the debate over the referendum.[/ltr]
[ltr]For its part, Russia denies any interference in the referendum on Britain's exit from the European Union or in the 2016 US presidential election.[/ltr]
[ltr]Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube have come under intense pressure in Europe and the United States to prevent countries from using their technology services to intervene in elections in other countries and to investigate when evidence of such interference appears.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The new Facebook search in Britain will require security experts to analyze historical data," wrote Simon Milner, director of Facebook policies in Britain, in a speech to the chairman of the British parliament's technology, culture and media committee, Damian Collins.[/ltr]
[ltr]"We want to do this quickly and expect it to take several weeks to complete," he said.[/ltr]
[ltr]Facebook said in December it had only reached 97 cents of advertising, published by Russian agents ahead of the vote in the British referendum, but only included accounts linked to a Russian-language service called Internet Research Agency.[/ltr]
[ltr]Last month, Collins described Facebook's initial research as "insufficient" and said Wednesday he welcomed the company's recent response.[/ltr]
