    Ali Baqarzadeh, deputy minister of education and head of the Organization of the Illiteracy Movement in Iran, announced that there are 2 million and 700,000 illiterates in Iran.

     
    "There are 2 million and 700,000 illiterates in Iran, including 1 million and 800,000 women, ranging in age from 9 to 49 years," Baqerzadeh said in a statement. "In some areas, the illiteracy rate rises to 30% .

     
    He pointed out that the rate of illiteracy is almost equal in some cities and villages of Iran, but the proportion of women is higher in the villages, and the rate of girls fleeing schools in western Khuzestan and border towns in Iran and Iraq are disturbing.

     
    Sistan and Baluchistan, then Khuzestan, are at the top of illiteracy statistics for girls, followed by Western Azerbaijan and Eastern Azerbaijan.

    "Poverty of families, lack of cost of education, participation of children in the household economy, child labor, cultural problems, seasonal migrations, lack of birth certificates, early marriage of girls and the mixing of boys with girls in secondary school" Illiteracy in Iran.

    According to Article 30 of the Iranian Constitution, "the government must provide free education to all people until the end of the intermediate stage, and expand the quality of higher education to the extent of self-sufficiency of the country free of charge."
