The phenomenon of drug abuse among Iraqi youth has become a major problem threatening the country's economic future and social cohesion, as well as its direct impact on the deteriorating security situation.

It did not stop when control of the entry of drugs into Iraq through the border crossings, with the influx of thousands of foreigners a day, especially from Iran, but it came to warn of Iraq's transformation into a drug product after it was a conduit.

A member of the Central Committee for the fight against drugs and psychotropic substances Kamel Amin said in a press statement: "Iraq before 2003 was a conduit for narcotics, but now it has become a conduit and consumer of these materials and many reasons in the forefront of the lack of control and border control firmly, Drug traffickers are supported by influential parties and have authority and influence on decision-makers, especially as drugs are a second means of funding after the illegal arms trade as well as the lack of awareness programs to protect young people. "

"The other reasons that push young people to use drugs to be easy prey, but the promoters of this deadly poison spread unemployment and low employment opportunities for them, in addition to the scarcity of recreational places and the most important is the lack of institutions and centers to deal with drug users."

He explained that "the openness of Iraq to the world, coupled with the lack of control over goods and goods entering the country has led to make Iraq a consumer country for drugs and producer at the moment, especially after the confirmation of information manufactured in the country because of the high consumption of industrial precursors in Maysan and other provinces, "The substance of precursors is an industrial substance with dual uses used in the manufacture of drugs and the drug industry, but the new law limited the importation of this substance."

Amin called on the responsible authorities to take firm and rapid measures to curb the spread of narcotics in the country by controlling borders and monitoring post offices, in addition to intelligence cooperation with countries, opening centers to treat abusers, and most importantly the role of families in raising and monitoring their children.
