Prime Minister Haider Abadi said that his government voted in favor of increasing the production of the field of Nasiriyah oil to 100 thousand barrels per day.
"The vote on the recommendation of the Energy Committee on the project to expand the production of Nasiriyah oil field of 100 thousand barrels per day," Abadi told reporters at a press conference.
The oil ministry said in November that «Iraq plans to increase production from the field of Nasiriyah oil to 200 thousand barrels per day of 90 thousand in the next few years without the request of assistance from international companies».
The Nasiriyah field was discovered in 1973 and seismic surveys proved the presence of oil in several oil formations in the layers of Al-Mashref, Al-Yamamah and Omar River. Exploration has shown that there are about 10.9 billion barrels of investmentable oil.
No significant work was done in the field until 2007, when it was commissioned by the Southern Oil Company to develop it and take advantage of the five wells and connect it to a gas station with a capacity of 30,000 barrels per day. After the completion of the work, the field began pumping oil at the rate of 15 thousand barrels per day in mid-2009, followed by a second phase to raise the production capacity of the surface facilities to 50 thousand barrels per day, and reached in August 2012 to the rate of 40 thousand barrels per day.
