A senior Democrat in the US Senate said he could not support President Donald Trump's plan to sell high-tech munitions to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates because of fears over the war in Yemen, a decision that could lead to the cancellation of the deal.
Sen. Bob Menendez, a senior Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said: "The administration has not been able to dispel its concerns about the precision-guided munitions deal of the two countries involved in a military alliance in Yemen, munitions that may be used to kill civilians."
His position could have thwarted the deal with Raytheon, the largest producer of such munitions in the United States.
"I remind you that the American people have a right to insist that the sale of American arms to foreign governments is compatible with American values and national security goals, especially sales of this size and the ability to kill," Menendez said in a letter.
"Congress, as the direct representative of the American people, is charged with effectively supervising such sales," he said in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Jim Matisse.
The administration of President Donald Trump has asked Congress to review the sale of more than 120,000 precision-guided munitions to the two Gulf allies. The value of the deals could not be determined, but previous sales of precision-guided munitions amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars or more.
