The United Nations welcomed the recommendation of the World Bank's Board of Trustees to allocate US $ 90 million to increase US $ 35 million over last year to respond to the economic situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, specifically the Gaza Strip.

Nikolai Mladenov, the United Nations coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said in a statement today that the significant increase in funding comes at a critical time when urgent measures are urgently needed to prevent renewed conflict and promote economic opportunities and livelihoods.

He stressed the importance of this step, especially to the Gaza Strip to save him from the economic and social collapse .. He

pointed out that half of the population of Gaza suffer from unemployment at a time when the basic services beyond the capacity.

He noted that this funding will be used in partnership with the Palestinian Authority to support key measures, including job creation through emergency cash-for-work programs and the rehabilitation of labor-intensive infrastructure.

The UN official stressed that the United Nations and its partners will continue their efforts to ease tensions in Gaza, address urgent humanitarian needs and support the legitimate return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza through the Egyptian-led reconciliation process.
