US President Donald Trump has threatened tough sanctions on anyone doing business with Iran.
"The United States will not trade with anyone doing business with Iran," Trump said in a tweet through his official Twitter account. "I ask for world peace, nothing less."
The US president said the sanctions against the Iranian regime, which suffers from economic problems and a currency collapse, "are the most severe."
Trump stressed that sanctions on Iran "will reach a higher level in November."
"The Iranian regime has to choose either to change its destabilizing behavior and to reintegrate into the global economy, or to move forward on a course of economic isolation," Trump said in a statement.
The sanctions against Iran were lifted following the signing of the agreement on Tehran's nuclear file in 2015 with the six major powers, before Trump withdrew in May.
The first batch of US sanctions, which went into effect at 4:01 GMT on Tuesday, targeted financial transactions and imports of raw materials, as well as the automotive and commercial aviation sectors.
The effects of Washington's sanctions are expected to severely impact many aspects of Iranian life, not only on the economic side but also on the social side, which the Iranian regime fears.
