The United States condemned the atrocities of the Syrian regime and demanded that it abide by international laws and norms in the treatment of detainees, including allowing independent monitors to access them.

"The recent warnings of the Syrian regime confirming the deaths of thousands of political prisoners in its prisons show what the international community has long suspected and can not forget," US State Department spokesman Heather Neuert said in a press release. "The regime has systematically been arrested, tortured, Thousands of Syrian civilians in response to their legitimate and peaceful demands for freedom and political reform. "

Since the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in 2011, at least 117,000 Syrians have been detained or forcibly disappeared, according to several human rights organizations. The vast majority are believed to be in the regime's jails, through a network of prisons where regime officials torture and kill civilians and silence any opposition to Assad's rule.

Noiret added that the international and humanitarian organizations concerned had compiled extensive documents and other evidence of this torture and murder, supported the world's continuing condemnation of the Syrian regime and prosecuted the officials mentioned in different courts.

The US State Department reiterated its condemnation of the brutal actions of the Assad regime and its call for compliance with international laws and standards relating to the treatment of prisoners, including access to independent monitors.

"We will continue to work with the international community to investigate and shed light on these heinous activities and to hold accountable those responsible," the statement said.
