Today, the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, announced that it has signed an agreement with the CIS Group, the largest technical and vocational training center in Lebanon, to help support its activity in both Lebanon and Iraq and enhance opportunities to qualify young people for the labor market.
This agreement comes within the framework of the “Afaq” initiative, which is a global initiative funded by the government of the Netherlands and aims to support host communities and marginalized groups most in need of access to education, social protection, and work.
This partnership will help CIS Group, a Lebanese institution operating in Lebanon and Iraq, improve its governance practices and support its educational services in order to provide young people with skills that match the needs of the labor market.
This partnership is the first IFC project in the technical and vocational education and training sector in Lebanon.
In this regard, Abdul Qader Mikdash, Chairman of CIS Group, said: “The International Finance Corporation, with its global experiences and expertise, will be of great importance to the company, especially with regard to improving governance practices and providing graduates with the skills that companies need. We are keen to work together to expand the scope of Our services and securing a better future for our graduates.”
Geopolitical and economic challenges - including unemployment - continue to hamper growth in Lebanon and Iraq, with the International Labor Organization estimating that nearly half of Lebanese youth are unemployed (47.8 percent) and women face greater difficulty finding work opportunities.
According to World Bank estimates, the unemployment rate among youth in Iraq is 32.3 percent.
The support provided to CES Group and its network of branches spread across both countries will contribute to changing this, and thus contribute to improving access to employment, increasing productivity, and economic growth.
For his part, Hans Pieter van der Voude, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Lebanon, said: “Lebanon faces severe social, economic and financial challenges, especially high unemployment rates among youth, and this agreement is important because it enhances the inclusion of youth in the pursuit of job opportunities, which supports economic recovery in the country.” Lebanon."
Both Lebanon and Iraq have groups that have been affected by conflicts and are in need of support and care as they find it difficult to secure a livelihood and find work.
Nearly 10 percent of the CES students in the two countries are from these most needy groups.
IFC will help CIS Group explore opportunities for their inclusion in the labor market, through coordination with the private sector to identify employment opportunities options and through partnerships with other development institutions and agencies active in this field.
