The Commission is looking into developing electronic voting devices

The Independent High Electoral Commission formed specialized committees to discuss the possibilities of developing and qualifying results acceleration devices in preparation for the 2025 elections.
The Director of the Operations and Information Technology Department at the Commission, Walid Khaled Abbas, explained to “Al-Sabah” that the devices are still operating on the “Android” system, which requires updating them and developing their working system with the latest version to keep pace with the technological development taking place in the world, noting the formation of specialized committees to discuss the possibilities of rehabilitating the devices programmatically. And developed using the latest technologies.
He pointed out that a study was presented regarding this for use in the 2025 elections, with the efforts of the Commission’s employees and the assistance of the companies contracted with it, indicating that the countries of Kyrgyzstan, the Congo, and Russia are using the same results acceleration devices that Iraq used in the recent provincial council elections.
Abbas added that the software varies according to the electoral system of each country, while the majority of European Union countries still rely on traditional paper voting according to a simple, classic process, indicating that a number of countries use electronic voting devices at home, which are specific to certain groups according to the laws, such as people with disabilities. Special needs and the elderly, while the United Arab Emirates used technologies somewhat similar to electronic voting that was used in Iraq when holding its local council elections.
