    Information / Baghdad ..
At a closed meeting in New York last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a frank assessment of the Venezuelan opposition, saying it had deep divisions that Washington could not contain.
The Washington Post reported that it had received an audio recording of Pompeo's remarks at the meeting, saying: "Our problem of maintaining the unity of the opposition has turned out to be diabolically difficult."
"The moment he leaves (Venezuelan President Nicolas) Maduro, everyone raises their hands and says," Take me, I am the next president of Venezuela. " There will be more than forty people who each believe to be the legitimate successor of Maduro. "
Pompeo said the divisions in the opposition groups explain why the coup attempt led by opposition speaker Juan Guadillo failed on April 30, adding that he was confident Maduro would eventually be forced to leave.
Pompeo said the difficulty of unifying the opposition had not been publicized "only in recent months, but since he became director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), it has been the focus of President Trump's efforts."
According to the newspaper, these Pompeo remarks provide a rare glimpse into the challenges facing the administration of US President Donald Trump at a time when efforts to overthrow Maduro are faltering and some countries that initially supported the opposition expressed their desire to explore alternative diplomatic ways to resolve the crisis.
It also represents a "sharp departure from the official line of the US administration," which usually refers to the unity and strength of the opposition led by Gaidu, recognized by some 60 countries as interim president of the country.
"If you have not succeeded in uniting the Venezuelan opposition since you became director of the CIA, and with all the power you have, you have to question yourself, because you prove that you are powerless," Venezuelan government deputy Diosdado Capello commented on Pompeo's description of the Venezuelan opposition. To a large degree "
