China: Trump "misleads" the people by linking it to the trade deal and slowing economy

BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing on Tuesday rejected US President Donald Trump's suggestion that Beijing needed a trade deal with the United States because of a slowdown in its economy, saying it was "completely misleading" and both countries wanted an agreement.
Trump said on Monday that the slowdown in China's economic growth was proof that US tariffs had "a big impact" and warned that Washington could intensify pressure further.
China's economic growth slowed to 6.2 percent in the second quarter, the weakest year-on-year growth in at least 27 years, under trade pressure from the United States, official data showed on Monday. In the first half of the year, the economy grew 6.3 percent from a year earlier.
China's growth rate in the first half of the year is "not bad performance" given the global economic uncertainties and slowing global growth, and is in line with external expectations, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.
Geng said in a daily press briefing that the stability of growth in China is good for the world and the US economy.
"As for the US claim that because of China's economic slowdown, China urgently hopes to reach an agreement with the US side," he said.
China and the United States are willing to reach a trade agreement, not China alone, he said.
Geng said many in the United States were strongly opposed to tariffs and trade war.
"I call once again on the US side to work hard with China and to meet on the basis of mutual respect and friendship, and to seek a mutually beneficial and mutually beneficial agreement, which is the expectation of the international community," he said.
