US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday he had received a "very nice message" from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, suggesting he might have another meeting with him.
But Trump, who said he received the letter on Thursday, did not say when the meeting would take place.
North Korea is conducting missile tests despite Trump's meeting with Kim on June 30, during which the two leaders agreed to revive stalled talks that have yet to resume.
Trump and Kim have met three times since late last year to discuss ways to resolve the standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs, but little progress has been made in meeting Washington's goal of persuading the North Korean leader to give up his nuclear weapons.
Recent missile tests have raised questions about the future of the dialogue. Pyongyang has warned that it may end a moratorium on nuclear and long-range missiles it has imposed since 2017.
Trump has repeatedly pointed to the freeze as evidence of successful contacts with Kim for more than a year.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday he hoped talks would resume and the US side was planning negotiations within a few weeks.
