    The United Nations World Food Program has welcomed a US contribution of $19.24 million from the US Agency for International Development (USAID-BHA) Office of Humanitarian Assistance.
    “This timely funding will help provide life-saving assistance to 181,000 displaced Iraqis and 72,000 Syrian refugees, which will be in the form of cash transfers that support their immediate food needs,” a WFP statement said.
    He added: “This US support helps ensure that people receive basic food and nutrition needs during and in the aftermath of crises – including during the post-conflict period and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also enable beneficiaries to withdraw their entitlements from cash assistance as they wish, without being limited to that.” This will encourage a smooth and effective process of delivering humanitarian aid and maintaining social distancing.”
    “With an estimated 1.2 million people still displaced in Iraq and 90,000 Syrian refugees in camps, the United States continues to support the World Food Program in its life-saving efforts to meet humanitarian needs,” the statement quoted USAID Chief of Mission in Iraq John Cardenas as saying. urgency.”
    Cardenas added: “This contribution also aims to further support the digitization of the Public Distribution System / Ration Card, which is a critical step to strengthen the social protection system in the Government of Iraq to meet the needs of citizens in addition to assisting the World Food Program in providing important and essential food assistance to displaced Iraqi families and Syrian refugees. .”
    He explained that "this new contribution will allow the program to provide better support to millions of Iraqis throughout the country by supporting the digitization of the Public Distribution System (the ration card) with the Ministry of Trade, which will allow more accurate and timely assistance to people in actual need by obtaining monthly food rations provided by the government. Iraq".
    For his part, the representative of the World Food Program in Iraq, Alireza Qureshi, said: “We are grateful for the unwavering support of the United States government and people in providing assistance to the vulnerable families of displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees, as well as in enhancing social protection, through reforming the public distribution system and strengthening government capacity Iraq.”
    He added, "The contribution will ensure that the progress made in improving food security for displaced families and refugees is maintained, and that basic and important technical support continues to be provided to the Government of Iraq in order to digitize the largest public distribution system that supports millions of Iraqis."
    And since 2010, USAID has been a consistent partner of the World Food Program in its emergency operation in Iraq.
