French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said today, Wednesday, that the current energy crisis with the sharp rise in prices is "similar to the severity of the oil shock in 1973."
The French minister explained that a second major plan of official aid, similar to what happened during Covid-19, "will fuel the price hike."
Oil and gas prices have witnessed a remarkable rise since the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, while the United States announced a ban on imports of Russian oil and gas.
The 1973 oil crisis, or the Arab oil embargo, occurred when the members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), in addition to Egypt, Syria and Tunisia, banned oil from Western countries and the United States by a unified decision, in response to the American and Western support for Israel in the October war.
