Today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Commerce confirmed that there is no shortage of foodstuffs inside its stores, and while it indicated that prices started declining after the recent government measures and activating the role of oversight, it confirmed its readiness to distribute two rations before the holy month of Ramadan.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, Muhammad Hanoun, said, "The government represented by the Ministry of Commerce has prepared and implemented a package of measures with the aim of pushing food prices back down, and all the recent decisions of the Ministerial Council for the Economy approved by the Council of Ministers yesterday are currently applied directly."
He added that "the markets today witnessed a stagnation and a lack of demand from citizens, which means that they are aware that the rise in prices was accompanied by a media campaign that caused popular concern that increased the demand for purchase."
He stressed that "the Ministry of Commerce does not suffer from any shortage of foodstuffs, and we have enough wheat stocks to distribute two rations in the month of Ramadan, and the shortage is in the commercial market only, and the ministry supplies the citizens covered by the ration card with seven items."
He stressed that "the Ministry of Commerce also pumped large quantities of foodstuffs, including vegetable oil, through food agents, and five days ago, the supervisory teams spread to monitor the market."
He pointed out that "oil prices have decreased and decreased by about 1000-1500 dinars, and now the Ministry of Trade is ready to prepare two meals from the ration card, and now all the general managers are distributed among the governorates of Iraq with the aim of preparing for the distribution process."
Yesterday, the Council of Ministers issued a package of new decisions on food security and redressing the global rise in food prices.
The media office of the Prime Minister said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the Council of Ministers approved, in its session held today, headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, a package of decisions and measures aimed at supporting food security and remedying the global rise in food prices resulting from coincidence of global crises.
He added, "The Council approved the following decisions:
First, the approval of receiving the local wheat crop in full (within and outside the approved plan) for the current season exclusively.
Second, the purchase price of the wheat crop for this season and subsequent seasons is according to the global price index approved by the Ministerial Council for Economy. It is determined annually in October, and reviewed in April if international prices change by more than 20%, up or down.Third
/ The price of receiving the wheat crop for the current season according to paragraph 1 above is 750 thousand dinars per ton.
Fourth / Completion of paying farmers’ dues for the previous agricultural season within 10 days, and paying farmers’ dues for the current season 2022 no later than June 30, 2022.
Fifth / Approving the minutes of the meeting on the agricultural plan and encouraging the use of modern irrigation techniques, signed by the Ministers of Agriculture and Water Resources and Adviser to the Prime Minister for strategic affairs.
Sixth / The Ministry of Finance, in coordination with the Central Bank of Iraq, provides sufficient liquidity through the initiative of the Central Bank of Iraq to support the agricultural sector to lend to farmers from government and private banks at an interest of 5% to be deducted for one time for the purpose of importing sprinkler irrigation systems (pivot and fixed) from solid international companies.
Seventh / The import ceiling of the Ministry of Commerce is about 3 million tons of imported wheat and according to what is marketed from the local crop to secure the ration card items and achieve food security, and the contract is with solid companies and without intermediaries of all origins in accordance with the Iraqi standard.
