Yesterday, Saturday, the local administration in Kirkuk called on Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to go to the province and open its international airport, confirming the completion of all technical and engineering requirements, noting that the project provides service to three million Iraqis in the province and its surrounding areas.
Kirkuk Governor Rakan Saeed Al-Jubouri said in a statement to a number of media outlets, including (Al-Mada), that "the components of Kirkuk demand Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to go to Kirkuk Governorate and open its international airport."
Al-Jubouri added, "The competent authorities have fulfilled all the requirements of the airport," stressing that "the local administration, since the first days of our taking over, has worked on starting the implementation of Kirkuk International Airport and completing its technical, engineering, administrative and security requirements with a series of meetings, visits, meetings and daily follow-up to the achievement."
He pointed out, "Our first demand is to achieve the dream of all the people of Kirkuk, and today we are heading to a peaceful demonstration for the citizens of Kirkuk with all their components, which came as evidence of the success of the administration and the awareness, understanding and support of the generous citizens of our province towards a common goal to operate the airport."
For his part, Al-Mada correspondent stated that "thousands of citizens of Kirkuk governorate demonstrated yesterday, Saturday, calling on the government and parliament to open the airport after completing all legal and technical procedures."
On a related level, the representative of Kirkuk, Gharib Askar, told (Al-Mada), that "our message to Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, that the time has come to realize the dream of our citizens, the opening of Kirkuk Airport is accomplished for all Iraqis."
Askar said, “It is illogical that we are in the twenty-first century and are unable to open an airport that serves humanity, and therefore, the opening of the airport has become a binding matter for the government of Prime Minister Al-Kazemi.”
Askar added, "The exit of thousands of citizens carries a clear message that the components of Kirkuk demand the opening of this project, which will serve more than 3 million citizens in Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and the surrounding areas."
Earlier, Ziad Salih, head of the Coordination Committee for Kirkuk Airport, said in an interview with Al-Mada that "Kirkuk International Airport is nearing completion in all technical, logistical and administrative fields."
And he indicated that "multiple committees from the Civil Aviation Authority, the Navigation and Air Forecasting Company, and others visited the airport to determine the final notes for opening the airport."
In addition, the Minister of Transport, Nasser Al-Shibli, stated in statements that were followed by (Al-Mada), that "Kirkuk Airport is not affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, but rather to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, and we in the Ministry of Transport have contracted with the investor for a long time when the airlines were affiliated with us."
Al-Shibli stressed, "The opening of Kirkuk Airport and work in it is dependent on a decision by the Civil Aviation Authority after completing the requirements."
Last September, Kirkuk MP Arshad al-Salihi revealed the issuance of approvals for the operation of the province's international airport.
