Parliamentary request to form an operations room to control price hikes

Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
Members of the House of Representatives called for the formation of a joint operations room to control market prices and provide foodstuffs, stressing that the solutions proposed by the relevant ministries are timely and incapable of addressing the crisis at the long level, and they talked about promises made by Finance Minister Ali Abdul Amir Allawi to present a program of work aimed at supporting poor classes.
Representative Jamal Cougar said, "Control over market prices is borne by government agencies, as they are responsible for drawing up financial and economic policy."
Cougar, a member of the Finance Committee in the former parliament, added, "The Ministry of Commerce's talk about addressing prices through the distribution of ration card items falls within the category of short-term immediate solutions, at a time when we should think of radical and strategic solutions."
He pointed out, "The crisis between Ukraine and Russia, which was the cause of the recent rise in prices, there is talk of its continuation for more than a year and perhaps up to two years."
And Cougar stated, "Distribution of two meals in Ramadan is enough to address the issue for a maximum of two months, at a time when we should think of solutions in conjunction with the presence of financial abundance stemming from the global rise in oil prices." He stressed, "the necessity of forming an operations room in which parliamentary committees and relevant ministries participate with the Chamber of Commerce and a group of merchants and investors in the economic sector; Let us mitigate the severity of the crisis and our work will be on two axes, the first is to control prices on the one hand, and provide consumer goods on the other hand.”
Cougar does not find that "executive measures to pursue those responsible for the rise in prices are sufficient, in conjunction with a global economic and financial crisis that has had an impact on Iraq." He called for "a quick government move to provide food supplies and then sell them at an officially subsidized price to the citizen through official shopping centers."
Cougar believes that "this is the only way to confront the crisis and achieve competition between the prices at which traders sell their foodstuffs, and what the government offers, and this would reduce prices in the market in general." He pointed out that "part of the issue of high prices has a global character, as the transport of goods has tripled," and spoke about "20% of global food security has been affected, as it is linked to the regions currently witnessing a conflict between Russia and Ukraine."
Cougar added, "The increase in international sanctions against Russia means a further rise in prices, as it affects the process of transporting goods, and perhaps Iraq is one of the affected countries as a consuming country, not a producer."
For his part, Representative Burhan Al-Maamouri said, "Iraq suffers from many problems at the economic level, exacerbated by the crisis of high prices, and thus our poverty and unemployment rates have increased."
Al-Maamouri continued, "The citizen today suffers from a clear damage to his daily strength," stressing that "the greed that is currently occurring in the markets through high prices needs governmental follow-up." And he demanded, "to activate the work of the committees concerned with following up the economic file, and to involve the House of Representatives in that, as it is the highest legislative authority, and it exercises constitutional functions represented by oversight and legislation."
Al-Maamouri finds, "The issue of high prices has global causes, but their agreement in Iraq came in an exaggerated manner, and the crisis was driven by traders in order to achieve gains at the expense of the people, and it may be behind political motives." He stressed, "The simple citizen is the most affected by these policies, and the lack of seriousness in dealing with those responsible for raising prices."
Al-Maamouri concluded, “The House of Representatives continues in its oversight duties, through a series of hosting ministers concerned with the financial and economic file, especially since the month of Ramadan is approaching and requires official authorities to impose their control over the markets.”
In addition, Representative Hamid Al-Shiblawy stated, "The issue of price follow-up was started by the House of Representatives by hosting Finance Minister Ali Abdel Amir Allawi to discuss with him on the issue, and after him Minister of Commerce Alaa Al-Jubouri."
Al-Shiblawy continued, "Ideas were put forward in Parliament that it is necessary to search for a mechanism that relieves the Iraqi citizen through the implementation of the relevant ministries' commitments and duties to control the economic situation." He went on to state that "the government has several duties, most notably following up the flow of goods and their prices, and those who seek to store them in order to have a negative impact on the market." Al-Shiblawy accuses "some major political forces of benefiting from this high, especially since some of them own banks that have made profits as a result of the rise in prices."
And he spoke about “promises made by the Minister of Finance to present a real plan aimed at supporting the poor classes, and to find solutions to the high prices, in addition to the problems left by the decision to change the exchange rate.”
Al-Shiblawy continued by saying, "The citizen is the only one affected by what is happening in the markets, and the talk about a drop in prices is not true at all."
The Ministry of Interior had announced the launch of tour teams working to follow up on the markets, while the Ministry of Commerce reported a relative drop in prices in conjunction with the start of distributing the ration card items to citizens
