A report by (Texas National Security Review) confirmed that the US military has violated the Geneva Conventions on the laws of war with regard to the protection of civilians in urban areas.
The report, which was translated by the information agency, stated, “The United States has shifted the armed forces from a population-centric counterinsurgency approach to enemy-centric operations that focus on killing, acute warfare, and the necessity of eliminating the opponent, and the United States has also invested in emerging technologies such as robotic and autonomous systems. , artificial intelligence, and hypersonic weapons, causing humanitarian disasters for civilians.”
And the report indicated that, “According to a study by the RAND Corporation to examine the harm caused to civilians during the battle of Raqqa in 2017, the data revealed that the number of dead and wounded civilians from the US-led coalition air strikes in Raqqa ranged between 8,000 and 13,000 civilians.”
And the report continued, “With regard to the Iraqi city of Mosul, when the campaign turned from exhaustion to extermination in 2017, which caused the death toll to rise to about 9 thousand dead and wounded among civilians, and 76 percent of the buildings were destroyed west of Mosul.”
Rather than accepting the results in Mosul and Raqqa as the best that can be done under these circumstances, the United States and its allies should instead critically assess measures as future war scenarios indicate that fighting is likely to take place in or near of the major population centres.
