On Saturday, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, presented a proposal to resolve the dispute over the Kurdish candidate for the post of President of the Republic, proposing to resolve this matter in the Kurdistan Parliament.
The Prime Minister said during his participation in the “Kurdish Issue in the Middle East” conference, which was held in the capital, Erbil, that “there is no paragraph that stipulates that the position of Prime Minister be for the Shiites, the President of the Republic for the Kurds, or the Speaker of Parliament for the Sunnis, but it has become a tradition to follow Now, as each component chooses its candidate for the position before Parliament votes on it.”
He added, "This tradition was broken in the last session, unfortunately, when a Kurdish majority did not choose the President of the Republic, but rather a Shiite majority."
The Prime Minister stressed the need to respect the election results, noting that “the party that won the largest number of seats in the Kurdistan Region has the right to nominate the President of the Republic,” adding that they suggested that the majority of the people of Kurdistan choose the candidate, in order to return to the old tradition, noting that “Kurdistan Parliament is the place that represents all citizens.
