Today, Tuesday, the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, stressed the need to cancel the tax on mobile phone recharge cards that was approved in 2015.
The media office of the First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives stated in a statement, “Hassan Al-Mandalawi stressed the need to cancel the tax imposed on credit cards for mobile phones.” This has led to an increase in the cost of communications for citizens over the past years.
He added, "Al-Mandalawi, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Finance, previously imposed a tax on mobile phone recharge cards in the 2015 budget, due to the budget deficit at the time, as a result of low oil prices and our war against terrorism, and given the high oil prices, and the lack of reasons for imposing this tax in At the moment it must be abolished."
He continued, "The tax imposed on phone recharge cards has burdened citizens, especially those with limited income."
In a related context, "the Ministry of Communications addressed the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers with a request to raise the tax imposed on phone recharge cards."
And Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri confirmed that "the House of Representatives is determined to cancel the recharge card tax, stressing the necessity of presenting it to the Council of Ministers for the purpose of voting on including its abolition in the 2023 budget."
