The popular markets in the city of Erbil are witnessing a great demand by shoppers, specifically the bala market or the so-called “al-lanka” market, which is frequented by a large number of citizens, whether they live in the city or come from other governorates.
The market is characterized by cheap price and quality for the various needs and requirements that the citizen needs, especially after the deterioration of living conditions in the Kurdistan region and the decline in the value of the Iraqi dinar against the rise of the dollar, and that the prices in the bale market balance with the purchasing power of citizens, unlike what we find in the markets and large stores in which they are The prices are very expensive and it is difficult for citizens with limited and middle incomes to buy them.
The advisor at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in the Kurdistan region, Fathi Muhammad Ali, told Al-Sabah: The value of importing used clothes that entered through Ibrahim Al-Khalil port and coming from Turkey in 2022 amounted to approximately $150 million to all governorates, as large tons of clothes enter the country. The trucks are closely monitored when they enter the port, and a number of them are examined to ensure that they comply with the instructions in terms of cleanliness and sterilization.
He added that the process of providing licenses to merchants and companies that import goods is valid for a period of six months only after obtaining approvals from the competent authorities, as bale clothes are imported by merchants from different countries, including Turkey, China, European countries and North America.
In turn, the specialist in economic affairs, Omid Dashti, told Al-Sabah: The (link) market is one of the important popular markets in the city of Erbil and meets the needs of citizens and families of the various segments of society, and is not limited to the poor or those with limited income, but rather the rich and well-off frequent it for shopping. And buy international brands at reasonable prices.
He pointed out that there are several reasons that drive citizens to shop from shops that sell used items and needs, especially clothes, bags and shoes, the most important of which is the decrease in purchasing power after the rise in the price of the dollar against the dinar, as well as the outstanding problems between the two governments in the Kurdistan region and Baghdad that made the citizen in constant fear and the possibility of not receiving The salary is on time and delayed, and most of the shoppers go to the bale market in the winter season more than in other seasons because the new clothes in the shops are very expensive and it is difficult for the limited-income family, which consists of a number of individuals, to have the ability to buy them.
As for the owner of the bale shop, Aso Haji, he told Al-Sabah: He buys used clothes and items from wholesalers, and each bale includes a large number of different clothes for both sexes and all ages, and then sorts and displays them.
He added that there is a great demand by citizens for it, and the prices range from 2,000 or 3,000 dinars per piece to 15,000 dinars, and that most of the shoppers are from the poor class and those with limited income.
Haji added that the bala market includes new goods, not just used and previously used goods, and also includes goods of international brands.
In her turn, citizen Jihan Hoshyar, an employee from Erbil, told Al-Sabah: "I have five children, two of whom are at university and three at different levels of education. We live in a rented house, and it is difficult to buy clothes, shoes and the necessary needs for the house from shops and commercial markets that It sells new goods, so we have to shop from the link because of the cheap price, and what I buy for my children of used clothes and shoes costs nearly 100,000 dinars as winter clothing for them. I find it in other stores for at least 500,000 or more, and we do not have the purchasing power for that.
She stressed that all prices are high, and it is difficult to buy everything that is new, and the bale market is considered a destination for the poor and needy.
