Shafaq News/ The Ministry of Agriculture revealed, on Tuesday, that there are 625 varieties of dates in Iraq, and while it indicated that they are among the "best and finest" species in the world, it showed that vertical farming is the best solution for cultivating dates.
The advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Damad Al-Qaisi, told Shafaq News agency; "The varieties of dates in Iraq exceed 625 varieties, and they are among the best and finest types of dates in the world," explaining that "these types are divided between dry and semi-dry, and the other part is commercial, and part of them is industrial, such as the type of Zuhdi, which is industrial, and also they are intended for human consumption."

He added, "The position of the Ministry of Agriculture in terms of the palm sector is that there is an expansion of agriculture in it according to controls that have been determined with the Horticulture Department, that the distance between one palm tree and another is 8 meters, and the use of drip irrigation techniques in order to serve the palm tree by means of machinery, preventing insects from moving to the palm tree, and addressing the water crisis."
He continued, "All palm groves began to rely on these foundations in palm cultivation, including palm groves for the private sector and palm groves for the holy shrines, which was reflected in the productivity of palm trees in Iraq in quantity and quality," noting that "the private sector took upon itself the internal marketing process of manufacturing and pressing And packaging, as well as foreign marketing, by granting an export license from the Ministry of Commerce.
Al-Qaisi pointed out that "Iraq also witnessed an increase in the number of palm trees, especially with the strong entry of the private sector into palm cultivation, which is resistant to salinity and drought and adapted to the atmosphere of Iraq and its productive life is long," noting that "there are estimates of the numbers of palm trees in Iraq and any unofficial census from Issued by the Central Statistical Organization is not approved.
He continued, "Going towards increasing productivity is better than increasing numbers, because a palm tree with high productivity is better than cultivating five palm trees with low productivity, because this will cause more labor and water to be reserved, so going towards vertical farming is better than horizontal farming."
He stressed that "the Ministry of Agriculture is currently working to encourage the investment aspect in agriculture and focus on food industries, as it is without manufacturing industries because it will give us high economic and food value and pushes the farmer to continue in agriculture, unlike just marketing agricultural products locally and without having a manufacturing industry for them."
Until the end of the sixties of the last century, Iraq exported about 75% of the world's dates and occupied the first place, but it declined during the past four decades to the ninth place, due to the lack of water quotas, diseases and wars that have killed millions of trees since 1980, to return once again interest in them within Agricultural initiative in 2008.
