{Politics: Al Furat News} The Parliamentary Development Institute, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program in Iraq (UNDP), held today, Sunday, a workshop on the United Nations Convention against Corruption and legal reform to combat corruption in Iraq for members of the Integrity and Legal Committees.
At the outset of the workshop, which was held in Al-Shabibi Hall in the Council building, MP Ziyad Al-Janabi, Chairman of the Integrity Committee in the House of Representatives, stressed the committee's response to the scourge of corruption that threatens the entity of the state and society by adopting modern methods that cover the main aspects of the deputy's job of oversight and legislation and through fruitful cooperation with the parliament's committees. And the supporting bodies in the Iraqi state, in addition to benefiting from cooperation with international organizations and civil society organizations, in a way that enhances the role of parliament in combating corruption.
Al-Janabi added that the House of Representatives, since its establishment in 2005 and within its constitutional powers, has made efforts to legislate laws, join relevant international agreements, form institutions concerned with combating corruption, develop educational and cultural curricula, and cooperate with civil society organizations in spreading a culture of integrity, preserving public money, and developing effective methods to combat money laundering. Supporting the role of senior management by intensifying efforts to contain, control and prevent corruption, and to establish effective systems to evaluate the performance of government institutions.
He pointed out that the House of Representatives exercised its legislative role and during its previous and current parliamentary sessions by issuing several laws, including the Integrity Commission Law No. 30 of 2011, the Financial Supervision Bureau Law No. 31 of 2011, the Iraq Fund Recovery Fund Law No. 9 of 2021, and the Public Integrity Commission Law for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq No. 3 For the year 2011, the House of Representatives approved accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption under Law No. 35 of 2007 and the ratification of the Arab Convention against Corruption under Law No. 94 of 2012.
The head of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee noted the presence of multiple bodies in Iraq that exercise their oversight role in combating corruption, including the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, the Federal Integrity Commission, the Office of Financial Supervision and the Money Laundering and Anti-Corruption Office, expressing his confidence that cooperation with relevant international organizations will further strengthen and develop the capabilities of members The House of Representatives in the legislative and oversight aspects in combating corruption in Iraq.
In his turn, Saad Fayyad, Director General of the Parliamentary Development Institute, stressed that the process of combating corruption in Iraq is an urgent and necessary need in the process of reaching a new benefit of development and economic stability in order to achieve a qualitative transition in the future visions of the state and its plans to cut off corruption and the corrupt and enhance the people's confidence in their national institutions He pointed out that supporting the fight against corruption takes place by activating the strengths and areas that must be strengthened in the legal framework for combating corruption in Iraq, in addition to the importance of enacting the anti-corruption law in Iraq.
Fayyad indicated that the Parliamentary Development Institute is working to provide all the necessary requirements for developing work in the House of Representatives, creating a suitable environment for legislation, providing opportunities to improve the level of performance, and providing everything that contributes to shedding light on international anti-corruption laws and benefiting from international expertise, whether in the field of supporting human capabilities and skills.
