    {Politics: Al Furat News} The Parliamentary Development Institute, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program in Iraq (UNDP), held today, Sunday, a workshop on the United Nations Convention against Corruption and legal reform to combat corruption in Iraq for members of the Integrity and Legal Committees.
    At the outset of the workshop, which was held in Al-Shabibi Hall in the Council building, MP Ziyad Al-Janabi, Chairman of the Integrity Committee in the House of Representatives, stressed the committee's response to the scourge of corruption that threatens the entity of the state and society by adopting modern methods that cover the main aspects of the deputy's job of oversight and legislation and through fruitful cooperation with the parliament's committees. And the supporting bodies in the Iraqi state, in addition to benefiting from cooperation with international organizations and civil society organizations, in a way that enhances the role of parliament in combating corruption.
    Al-Janabi added that the House of Representatives, since its establishment in 2005 and within its constitutional powers, has made efforts to legislate laws, join relevant international agreements, form institutions concerned with combating corruption, develop educational and cultural curricula, and cooperate with civil society organizations in spreading a culture of integrity, preserving public money, and developing effective methods to combat money laundering. Supporting the role of senior management by intensifying efforts to contain, control and prevent corruption, and to establish effective systems to evaluate the performance of government institutions.
    He pointed out that the House of Representatives exercised its legislative role and during its previous and current parliamentary sessions by issuing several laws, including the Integrity Commission Law No. 30 of 2011, the Financial Supervision Bureau Law No. 31 of 2011, the Iraq Fund Recovery Fund Law No. 9 of 2021, and the Public Integrity Commission Law for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq No. 3 For the year 2011, the House of Representatives approved accession to the United Nations Convention against Corruption under Law No. 35 of 2007 and the ratification of the Arab Convention against Corruption under Law No. 94 of 2012.
    The head of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee noted the presence of multiple bodies in Iraq that exercise their oversight role in combating corruption, including the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, the Federal Integrity Commission, the Office of Financial Supervision and the Money Laundering and Anti-Corruption Office, expressing his confidence that cooperation with relevant international organizations will further strengthen and develop the capabilities of members The House of Representatives in the legislative and oversight aspects in combating corruption in Iraq.
    In his turn, Saad Fayyad, Director General of the Parliamentary Development Institute, stressed that the process of combating corruption in Iraq is an urgent and necessary need in the process of reaching a new benefit of development and economic stability in order to achieve a qualitative transition in the future visions of the state and its plans to cut off corruption and the corrupt and enhance the people's confidence in their national institutions He pointed out that supporting the fight against corruption takes place by activating the strengths and areas that must be strengthened in the legal framework for combating corruption in Iraq, in addition to the importance of enacting the anti-corruption law in Iraq.
    Fayyad indicated that the Parliamentary Development Institute is working to provide all the necessary requirements for developing work in the House of Representatives, creating a suitable environment for legislation, providing opportunities to improve the level of performance, and providing everything that contributes to shedding light on international anti-corruption laws and benefiting from international expertise, whether in the field of supporting human capabilities and skills. Required to achieve the desired goals in reducing the phenomenon of corruption or to provide an opportunity for parliamentarians to create the appropriate climate and appropriate conditions to be provided with the necessary information on legal reform and its impact on the quality of services and performance in general.
    The Director General stated that the Parliamentary Development Institute is very interested in improving the level of performance in the legislative institution by holding training and development workshops, including this workshop, which is held in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program in Iraq to support efforts to enhance the implementation of Iraq's international commitments to combat corruption, indicating that a large part of These efforts depend on increasing parliamentarians' awareness of the United Nations Convention against Corruption and the obligations arising from it, which will reflect positively on Iraq's reputation and its global ranking on the list of countries facing corruption in all its forms.
    Fayyad pointed out that ensuring transparency and the importance of legal reform, in addition to the procedures adopted to eradicate corruption to raise the level of performance of all institutions, including the House of Representatives, put the Council in facing challenges and keeping pace with the means capable of bringing about real change on the ground, as well as achieving an integrated vision to reach the desired goals. Referring to the support provided by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, his two deputies, and the Secretary-General of the House of Representatives for everything that contributes to developing the work of the House of Representatives and providing appropriate conditions for the work of the Parliamentary Development Institute to keep pace with the basic needs in the field of training and increase the information of representatives and cadres in the House at all levels by providing opportunities for cooperation with various parties concerned. 
    For his part, Yama Turabi, Director of the Anti-Corruption Project, pointed out the importance of the workshop in dealing with everything related to combating corruption and its impact on changing the general situation in Iraq.
    Turabi referred to the importance of the United Nations Convention against Corruption and the legal reform to combat corruption in Iraq and their role in the field of making changes and defining the importance of the Convention and joining it, praising the cooperation with the House of Representatives and the Parliamentary Development Institute in defining the importance of working to combat corruption, noting the importance of the Iraqi government benefiting from every What is related to combating corruption and following up international reports in this regard, as well as benefiting from international anti-corruption expertise.
    The international expert of the United Nations Development Program, Hussein Hassan, gave explanatory and interactive presentations in the two axes of the workshop on the approach of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in preventing and criminalizing corruption, international cooperation is required and the United Nations Convention against Corruption: the review mechanism and the role of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention (COSP).
    Hassan urged greater cooperation between international experts and parliamentarians in the field of holding specialized training workshops, reviewing the provisions of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, as it is the first international agreement on corruption, which represents the abuse of power to achieve financial benefits, indicating that corruption is the biggest challenge in Iraq, which requires efforts. diligently to eradicate it.
    The international expert of the United Nations Development Program, Hussein Hassan, referred to the purposes of the international convention in promoting integrity and accountability, facilitating international cooperation and promoting measures aimed at combating corruption, explaining the features of the agreement, the scope of application and the most important provisions it includes, as well as the importance of developing a legal framework to adopt transparency within anti-corruption measures.
    The workshop witnessed many interventions and discussions on the content of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, its review mechanism, the role of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention (COSP), strengths and areas that should be strengthened in the legal framework to combat corruption in Iraq.
    The project, supported by the European Union, is one of the justice initiatives to reduce corruption and promote the settlement of commercial disputes with the support of the United Nations Development Program in Iraq and to raise parliamentarians’ awareness of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and the obligations arising therefrom, in addition to supporting Iraq’s efforts to enhance the implementation of international obligations in combating corruption. .
