The government seeks to develop and rehabilitate the capital, Baghdad, in line with the size of the population and the streets. It intends to establish a residential city with 90,000 housing units accompanied by integrated services.
The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers confirmed that the completion rates at the entrances to the capital amounted to 60-65%, and work is continuing in them, while specialists emphasized that the step of developing residential cities will contribute to reducing real estate prices and containing the housing crisis.
Haider Majeed, a spokesman for the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, says, “The capital, Baghdad, is witnessing multiple projects in the housing sector and relieving traffic jams,” noting that “Baghdad has not witnessed new updates during the previous years in the field of urban planning.”
Majeed added, "The government's plan at the present time is to move towards alleviating the housing crisis, and this file was included in the ministerial curriculum," stressing that "the prime minister attaches great importance to this file."
He pointed out, "There is a governmental direction to develop Sadr City and advance its status as a launch for an urban project within the capital," pointing to "the establishment of a city of Sakina containing 90,000 housing units in addition to vital services."
Majeed pointed out, "The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers has come a long way in the field of rebuilding the capital, and among the files that the Secretariat worked on is the allocation of sufficient space to establish a residential city."
He explained that "the government is seeking to add aesthetics to the capital, Baghdad, to employ manpower and provide job opportunities," noting that "among the government's approach is to develop a network of internal and external roads linking the neighboring cities adjacent to the capital, Baghdad."
And Majeed said, "The percentage of completion at the entrances to the capital has reached 60-65%, and work is continuing," pointing out that "the development work includes the construction of main gates for the entrances to the capital, Baghdad, and the length of each entrance ranges between 25 to 30 km."
He noted, "The rehabilitation of roads, their expansion, cladding and furnishing, the establishment of median islands and the planting of sidewalks, and there will be a number of overpasses and bridges as alternatives to the current turns."
And Majeed went on to say that “some roads and projects in Baghdad were facing certain problems that have been resolved,” adding, “Soon, the rehabilitation works of Abu Nawas Street will be completed and it will be opened to citizens.”
In turn, the spokesman for the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Istabraq Sabah, says, "The Ministry of Construction has begun making designs for new residential cities," noting that "the population gap is widening daily due to the increase in the number of residents."
He added, “We target the middle class and the poor in future housing projects,” noting that “the Ministry of Planning is the authority concerned with slums within the poverty alleviation strategy.”
Sabah continued, "We set special standards to present appropriate designs and visions for new housing projects," pointing out that "there is a launch soon for residential cities to provide housing for all segments of society."
For his part, Safwan Qusai, a researcher in economic affairs, says, "The step of developing residential cities will contribute to reducing real estate prices and containing the housing crisis," stressing, "The need for us to have smart residential cities that keep pace with technological development."
Qusai explained, "The social return will grow over time if we provide suitable housing for Iraqi families," calling for "organizing residential cities according to a clear economic system to create job opportunities and provide services."
He pointed out, "The population of Iraq will reach 50 million people, and the necessary and appropriate housing must be provided," noting that "Iraq needs investment in annual ways, especially in the capital, Baghdad."
Qusai continued, "We need to focus on the old cities in Baghdad and the provinces and rehabilitate them," noting that "the provinces of Iraq have advantages that could be a title for new residential cities."
