    Alsumaria News - Economy

Iraq imported more than 12.5 million tires for various wheels and means of transportation, at a value of 500 million US dollars, during the past 15 months, according to economic expert Manar Al-Obeidi.

Al-Obeidi said in a blog post, followed by Alsumaria News, that "the value of Chinese exports in the first quarter of 2023 amounted to about 1.9 million tires, at a value of $75 million, declining by 39% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, which amounted to about 2.8 million tires, at a value of $125 million, and down from a quarter." The first of 2022, with a rate of 1.38%, as the number of imported tires reached 2.12 million tires, at a value of 76 million US dollars.

The average price of an imported tire was $40, according to al-Obeidi.

He continued, "The question is, if the annual import rate of tires to Iraq is more than 500 million US dollars only from China, what is the real problem in setting up projects to produce various tires that save the value of these exports, find job opportunities for various youth, and contribute to increasing the gross domestic product?" He explained, "Is there actually a problem in creating the investment environment to establish such industrial projects that reduce the volume of increasing consumption, or have we learned to be consumers and not producers?"[/size]
