    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Iraq is striving to stop flaring gas associated with oil operations, and to benefit from it in power plants.
"Iraq is the second country in the world in gas flaring, and its annual losses amount to 3 billion dollars," MP Mudar al-Karwi said in a statement to "Baghdad Today."
Al-Karawi added, "Iraq has been burning for decades huge quantities of gas daily from several oil fields, and its annual losses amount to approximately 2-3 billion dollars, while it imports gas to feed its power stations, a large part of which operates on gas at a rate of 3 billion dollars annually," pointing out that "The numbers give a clear idea of the gas file."
And he confirms that "according to our foreseeable reports, Iraq has gas reserves estimated at 3.5 trillion cubic meters (125 trillion cubic meters), 70% of which is in the form of gas associated with oil, and 30% of it is in the form of free gas reservoirs in different regions of the country."
    Government moves
Al-Karawi explains that "the vision of the Sudanese government in the possibility of achieving sufficiency in gas within 2-3 years is realistic to end the external import file and the possibility of exporting large quantities, especially with the growing market demand for gas at high levels in the world, which allows Iraq to benefit from its large reserves spread in 5 current locations." Most notably, Mansouriya in Diyala.
    Iraq losses
At the end of last March, the advisor to the Prime Minister, Mazhar Muhammad Salih, confirmed in a press statement followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the losses incurred by Iraq as a result of importing gas to operate power stations, or burning from the central and southern fields, is estimated at about $ 12 billion annually, which is an exorbitant cost." greatly on oil resources, and on the country's financial resources.
He added, "What Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Suwadani announced, about taking several measures to develop the energy sector and invest in associated gas, represents the beginning of two things: the first is stopping and zeroing gas burning in order to protect the Iraqi environment from pollution and problems, and the second is the use of gas after its treatment for the purposes of power stations."
Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani confirmed, during his participation via visual communication technology in the (Summit for Democracy) conference, that the government has taken several measures to develop the energy sector and invest in the gas associated with oil extraction, in order to stop the losses of this important wealth for generations. Coming, and to obtain an important source for the operation of power plants, and reduce environmental pollution.
