Stopping the expansion of slums depends on building new residential cities

There is no doubt that the housing crisis is one of the biggest crises facing the country, and it is one of the thorny issues that has become extremely difficult and complex to solve. With the increase in residential complexes and their clear spread throughout the governorates, especially the capital, Baghdad, the prices of residential units are on the rise. This burdens citizens, which has led to an increase in random gatherings throughout the governorates, the largest of which is in Baghdad.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Al-Sabah: The number of slums exceeded 4,000, noting that the capital, Baghdad, has the largest number, with about 1,000 slums.
He continued that the number of slums in Basra Governorate is 700, noting that the rest of the governorates are inhabited by approximately 4 million Iraqis, who constitute 9 percent of the total population in the country.
Al-Hindawi pointed out that the residential cities that the Ministry of Housing and the National Investment Authority are working on will be an important addition to the housing sector and will contribute to addressing a large part of the crisis.
In turn, the spokesman for the Ministry of Construction, Istabraq Sabah, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that the Council of Ministers approved the construction of four new residential cities within the plan adopted by the Ministry of Construction to build new cities, explaining that these four cities are out of a total of 15 new cities that will be built in all governorates. .
He added that the first batch of these cities includes about 200,000 housing units, pointing out that building new cities differs from building residential complexes because they require larger and wider infrastructure and streets.
