Baghdad will not lose Washington and is working to curb the militias in conjunction with the intervention of the factions in Gaza

Baghdad/ Tamim Al-Hassan
Information indicates that there were casualties among members of Iraqi factions on the Lebanese-Israeli border as part of the Gaza events. So far, these factions are participating in the war “partially,” while preparing for a “comprehensive intervention” in the event that Israel invades Gaza on the ground.
On the other hand, there appears to be cooperation between Baghdad and Washington and “preemptive measures” to prevent the movement of these groups to the border with Israel.
Baghdad describes these factions as “militias out of power,” which may reduce the former’s responsibility to the United States.
The government has been working for about a year to convince Washington of the economic reforms it is carrying out at home and to prevent dollar smuggling.
The escalation adopted by Iraqi factions against the situation in Gaza threatened to expose these groups to bombing, as happened in 2019 on the border with Syria. In return, these armed groups threatened to target American interests in Iraq and other countries supportive of Israel if the latter stormed the Gaza Strip.
A Shiite official confirmed to Al-Mada about “the movement of factions to the borders with Israel in Lebanon and Syria.” These groups are classified as having “Iranian reference,” and some of them have been present for at least 10 years in those countries.
The official, who requested to remain anonymous, points out that “some factions suffered casualties due to partial participation on the Lebanese-Israeli border.” The official expects that these factions will increase their participation in the events if Tel Aviv carries out its threat to “storm Gaza by land.” Until now, the factions link their participation in the Gaza events to “direct” American intervention, despite Washington’s announcement of sending aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean.
Kazem al-Fartusi, spokesman for the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades, says that the Iraqi factions “are ready to intervene in Gaza, in reality and not in the media.”
According to Al-Fartusi, who spoke to local media, their intervention depends mainly on “the United States of America’s direct participation in this war.”
Before that, he had threatened Hadi Al-Amiri, the leader of the Badr Organization, and Muqtada Al-Sadr, the leader of the Sadrist movement, warning the United States against interfering.
Abu Hussein Al-Hamidawi, Secretary-General of the Hezbollah Brigades, also said, “The legal duty requires our presence in the field, to repel the evils of the enemies.”
Qais al-Khazali, leader of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, said that he was watching “the events closely, prepared and not spectators.” On the other hand, the official close to the coordination framework indicates that “Baghdad is largely reassured that it will not be subjected to sanctions because of the position of those groups.” The official explained, “Baghdad describes these groups as militias, and their actions are personal and individual, and the government does not control them.”
He added: “Baghdad and the United States may cooperate in determining the movement of these groups and curbing them.” Most information now indicates that the faction closest to participating in the events in Gaza is the Nujaba Movement, led by Akram Al-Kaabi.
The movement, in a video it posted on its news platforms, claimed that it is “the resistance most qualified to enter Gaza because of its superior training and armament.”
The movement claimed, quoting Amir Mousavi, who spoke in the video, and whom the clip described as a “political expert,” that it “has special commando teams qualified for these operations.”
Mousavi added: “Al-Nujaba is quick to move because it is not linked to the Iraqi government, and it has an independent decision.” Moussawi, who appeared as a former diplomat, was prevented from appearing on Iraqi channels because he “threatens Iraqi national security,” according to a document published by the Information Authority. Nouri al-Maliki, the former Prime Minister, said in the leaked recordings attributed to him (the issue that was raised last year) that Mousavi “is not a diplomat, but rather an element in Iranian (intelligence) intelligence.”
Joe Biden, the US President, had previously threatened to assassinate Akram Al-Kaabi during a phone call last February, with Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani, due to Al-Nujaba’s involvement in attacking American sites in Syria, according to what was published by Middle East Eye.
The website said that Biden “gently” reminded the Iraqi Prime Minister that the American administration “supports his government to a broad degree, but this support is neither free nor open.”
The report quoted Musaed Al-Sudani, who is also a Shiite political leader, as saying that Al-Sudani must “exploit his proximity to the Iraqi armed factions to restrain them to ensure continued American support.” This is exactly the content of that call.”
In turn, the Shiite official close to the “Frame” says, “Washington seems somewhat convinced of Baghdad’s measures to reform the economy, especially with the recent briefing by the United Nations representative in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, and the statements of the American Ambassador, Elena Romanowski, who supported the government’s measures.”
These developments came to the fore in Baghdad hours after Sudanese hosted an emergency meeting of the coordination framework forces, during which developments in Gaza were discussed.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the attendees condemned the “Zionist attack” and “the brutal siege” on the Gaza Strip.
The attendees appreciated the positions of the religious authority in Najaf, and called for the continuation of popular and national demonstrations and events in support of the Palestinian cause.
They also expressed their thanks to the Iraqi government for its courageous stance in defending the Palestinian people, and called on the House of Representatives to adopt a draft resolution and a unified position towards these violations.
The government's military spokesman, Yahya Rasoul, announced last Saturday that he would begin receiving donations and humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people. Rasoul said in a statement, “The receipt of humanitarian aid to the brotherly Palestinian people will begin tomorrow (yesterday), Sunday, at nine o’clock in the morning, 24 hours a day.”
He added, “This step comes in implementation of the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces regarding the formation of a joint committee to deliver donations and humanitarian aid to the brotherly Palestinian people besieged in Gaza.”
