Today, the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Gamal Rashid, stressed the importance of establishing dams to store water and addressing the problems of drought, desertification and low groundwater levels, stressing the need for coordination and cooperation with upstream countries to increase water releases.
A statement from the Presidency of the Republic reported to Al-Hayat Al-Akhbariya stated that Rashid received, at Baghdad Palace, the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, and they discussed the water situation and addressing the effects of resulting water scarcity in the country.
Emphasizing the importance of coordination and cooperation with upstream countries to increase water releases, and continuing to make efforts at the regional level to preserve Iraq's fair and sufficient share of water.
He stressed “the need to focus on the water reality and develop it through continuous follow-up on the construction of dams to store water and address the problems of drought, desertification, low groundwater levels, and exceeding water quotes by establishing unlicensed fish lakes, In addition to the need to improve water management and prevent waste and excessive use, whether for agricultural purposes or direct use and initiation of media awareness campaigns in this regard.”
For his part, Minister of Water Resources Awni Diab affirmed, “The Ministry will continue its tireless efforts with the relevant neighboring countries to reach just and equitable results in water policies that guarantee rights, take into account and preserve life and the environment, and secure the common interests of all.”
