Minister of Water Resources: Drought will hit Baghdad and Nasiriyah and displaced from the marshes
Minister of Water Resources Hasan al-Janabi said Saturday that a severe drought will hit Iraq. "Rural areas will be severely affected, and southern Baghdad and Nasiriyah will not be able to get drinking water in the coming summer.
Al-Janabi said in televised remarks that "all the current indicators indicate a severe drought in Iraq, and will be more severe in the summer next, because of high temperatures and increase in evaporation rates, pointing out that" the Iraqi countryside in general will be affected a lot, Also, the marshes. "
"The areas south of Baghdad and Nasiriyah will not be able to get drinking water in the summer," he said.
"If no practical measures are taken to reduce the drought, we may see a wave of displacement from the marshes," Janabi said.
