Alsumaria News - Politics

The Coordination Framework announced today, Thursday, November 16, 2023, its commitment to the decisions of the judiciary and the Federal Court, calling on the political partners to reach further understandings in a way that contributes to and enhances stability and development.

A statement from the media department of the coordination framework, received by Alsumaria News, stated that the latter “held its 174th regular meeting to discuss the latest developments in the country,” reiterating its commitment to “the decision of the House of Representatives to fulfill the constitutional entitlement of holding local elections in the middle of next month.”

The framework affirmed its “respect for the principle of separation of powers and complementarity among them and its commitment to the decisions of the judicial authority and the Federal Court,” calling on everyone to “commit to what supports the rule of law.”

The framework called on "political partners to engage in more understandings and dialogues in a way that contributes to and enhances stability and development."

On Tuesday, the Federal Supreme Court in Iraq issued a decision to terminate the membership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Al-Halbousi, after a “forgery” lawsuit filed by one of the representatives, while Al-Halbousi described the court’s decision to end his term as “strange.”

The Supreme Court ruling represents another development in Iraq, which is witnessing political unrest, as internal divisions lead to the formation and breaking of alliances between the main parties and leaders of political alliances.

On the other hand, the Iraqi government set next December 18 as the date for holding local elections, while affirming its support for the Election Commission to carry out its tasks and provide all requirements for the electoral process to ensure fair, honest and transparent elections.

The Iraqi provincial council elections will be held according to the “Saint-Lego” method, which relies on dividing the coalition votes by the electoral divisor of 1.7, which makes the fortunes of large political entities rise at the expense of individual candidates (independent and civilian), as well as emerging and small entities.

The elected provincial councils are responsible for selecting the governor and the governorate’s executive officials, and have the powers of dismissal and appointment, and approving the project plan according to the financial budget allocated to the governorate by the central government in Baghdad, in accordance with the Iraqi constitution. These will be the first local elections held in Iraq since April 2013.
