International skepticism about Iraqi agriculture... Modern irrigation succeeds, but it will not be enough to confront your drought

The World Food Program official in Iraq, Khansa Ghazi, said that modern sprinklers consume 70% less water, compared to traditional irrigation methods, and are capable of improving agriculture in Iraq, but they are not sufficient to address the complex problem of drought, stressing the need to develop broader strategies for water management.
She added in a statement that last year, the World Food Program provided support to about 1,119 Iraqi farmers, who were provided with agricultural sprinkler and drip irrigation systems, in the areas most affected by climate change and drought.
Ghazi explains that modern irrigation systems allow maintaining continuity of production during periods of water scarcity and drought. In addition, these modern methods ensure the continuity of agriculture throughout the year, in addition to high productivity and harvest, and they also reduce dependence on rain, which is difficult to predict.
She says that the process of irrigation with sprinklers in the fields consumes 70 percent less water, and although modern irrigation systems are able to significantly improve the efficiency of water use and agriculture in Iraq, they may not be sufficient alone to address the complex problem of drought.
It speaks about the need to develop broader strategies for water management in the country with a population of 43 million people. Drought and lack of rain forced the state to ration water use and reduce agricultural land to provide water for the daily use of the population, especially during the summer.
