    Economy News - Baghdad
The Minister of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities, Benkin Rekani, said on Thursday that the number of cars in the capital, Baghdad, has doubled by 7,000 percent in recent years.
Rikani added during a dialogue session organized by the Iraqi House Salon Foundation, and attended by the “Al-Eqtisad News” correspondent, that “Baghdad is designed to accommodate two million people, while it is currently inhabited by 5 million people, and that the number of cars in the capital has doubled by 7,000 percent.”
He stressed that "eliminating traffic congestion requires providing land to move to new cities and neighborhoods on the outskirts of the capital to reduce the congestion occurring on the main streets."
In the same regard, Rikani stated that “projects to relieve traffic congestion were designed in a new way and new technologies were used, as in the Cordoba Bridge and Nisour Square.”
He explained, "There are two packages that will follow the first package for projects to relieve irrigation bottlenecks, which will include the construction of a bridge adjacent to the Sarafiya Bridge in Baghdad."
He attributed the reasons for the projects' delay to two things: the first related to the government and the second to the contractor, as the latter takes part of the amount and flees.
